Your new home city for the semester, here's what to expect.

About the city

Galați is one of Romania's largest port cities, sitting where the Danube, Siret and Prut rivers meet, close to both Moldova and Ukraine. It has a long industrial and shipbuilding history and today is a lively university city, home to "Dunărea de Jos" University, where most incoming Erasmus students study.

Getting around

Galați is compact and walkable and local buses/trams cover the rest. The train station connects to Bucharest, Iași and other major cities, making weekend trips easy.

Student life

Between lectures, you'll find plenty going on: cafés and bars around the city centre, the riverside promenade along the Danube for a relaxed evening walk and, of course, the events our ESN section organizes throughout the semester. Check the Events page to see what's coming up.

Practical tips

  • Bring layers - summers are hot, winters can be cold with wind off the Danube
  • Learn a few basic Romanian phrases; locals appreciate the effort even if most young people speak English
  • Get in touch with your ESN buddy early - we're here to help with paperwork, housing questions and settling in
